Bilfinger BergerHerrentunnel, Germany

The new "Herrentunnel" has replaced the aged "Herrenbruecke", a bascule bridge of reduced usefulness.

Construction began on October 15, 2001 and was completed end of August 2005.

With the opening of the new tunnel unhindered ship and car traffic on and across the river was assured. After a concession period of 30 years, ownership will transfer to the city of Lübeck.

Governmental contribution to the financing amount to € 90 million, the sum that would have had to be spent on construction and maintenance of a new bridge. The additional expenditure required by the tunnel solution was financed through a toll fee. No costs were generated for the city of Lübeck.

Financing is shared by HSH Nordbank and the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW).
